How to Read Textbooks for Free

Posted on: January 7, 2010

You know how tough it is to wait in line at the college bookstore to try to buy your textbooks for the quarter/semester? And you never know how the textbooks you order online are going to turn out, neither. Well, my Biochem TA just told us how we can access every chapter from all textbooks using PubMed, a national medical article database. This is better than Google Books.

Here’s how:

1. Search for the title and author of your textbook using the search value “books.”

2. Click directly on the picture of your actual textbook (not the search listings next to it). The table of contents of your book will be displayed

3. Copy the title of whatever chapter you want to read and then cut & paste it into the search box using the value radio button “within this book.”

4. You will see a link to the chapter and you can read just that chapter

5.  Repeat this for whatever chapter you want

It’s not the most convenient way to do it, but at least you don’t have to deal with Google Book’s inconsistencies and their limited view policy.
