I work at a drug rehab center. I was wondering why one of our young clients came back after just having graduated the program a week earlier. He and I were alone at the nurses station and I was taking his vitals and giving him his meds.

“Hey Greg*, welcome back. I can’t say I’m glad to see you, but welcome back.”

“Thanks… I wasn’t really ready to leave just yet.”

“You could have just said that, instead of overdosing twice on the same day at home. So did you see a a light at the end of the tunnel?

“No. Actually, wait. Yes. I did!”

“I really did. I was in some kind trance but there was really a tunnel, somehow. I also felt like I was flying outside of my body.”

“You had an out-of-body experience?!”

“You LIAR.”

“I really did, that’s what it felt like. It’s happened to me a couple of times already.”

“What the hell do you mean?”

“Well, I can’t kick something unless I go through a traumatizing event. When I was addicted to ‘E,’ I was so dehydrated I had to be taken to the medical tent. And when I was a big lush, I was able to get over it because I ran into a tree while drunk-driving.”

“What are you getting at?”

“Dude, crack is hardcore stuff. I needed something ultra-traumatic to get it into my mind that the stuff is bad.”

“You almost killed yourself and even had your own mother doing CPR on you, all just to drive a point?!?”

“It means that I was meant to stay in this world for a reason. Now I have a purpose in life!”
