Sjogren’s Syndrome

Posted on: June 16, 2005

A middle-aged woman came in insisting that she had had continual dry mouth for 4 months now. Her sister-in-law, who may have had fibromyalgia, told her about Sjogren’s syndrome and insisted that it may be the cause of the patient’s dry mouth as well.

I wasn’t able to discern Doc’s notes but I’m starting to notice more and more patients are insisting that they have a certain disease based on hearsay or via the internet. In which case, I wonder why patients come to the doctor at all, if they’re already positive of their own self-made diagnosis. Are they just waiting for confirmation?

It seems much harder to disccredit a patient’s research on their own health especially since it sometimes makes them feel foolish. Sensitivity to their feelings must be taken into account before introducing a doctor’s own findings, lest they be more enraged.
