Hand Laceration

Posted on: May 30, 2005

Adult patient came in today for a follow-up after visiting the emergency room for a deep laceration on his left hand/wrist aspect requiring 12 stitches.

I presented him to the doctor without unraveling his bandage.

Unfortunately, this prohibited the doctor from seeing the wound expeditiously because the gauze had tangled itself into the stitches. I had to remove the gauze carefully by soaking it in sterile saline solution in order to ease the patient’s pain.

Meanwhile, the doctor left to continue seeing a different patient while I attempted to soak the bandage. Note that when I removed the gauze I kept it for the doctor to observe upon his return.

I wonder if I had done the right thing by leaving the patient “as-is” and waiting for the doctor’s order to unravel the bandage or would it have been wise to prepare him ahead of time knowing that it was just a laceration?…
