Colpo Procedures

Posted on: May 10, 2005

Having come from a military background, I sought to learn more about women’s health by joining Family medicine.

I routinely prepare the exam room for my doctor’s patients that are having pap-smears. Sometimes, however, those pap-smears come back with results that say they have found a cell that shouldn’t be there.

Enter the colposcopy procedure. It’s quite an adventure for our female patients and was quite puzzling to me.

I’m simple-minded, so I figured a colposcopy was just another diagnostic procedure that comes after an abnormal pap-smear.

I couldn’t be more wrong. There are different methods of approach to a patient’s abnormal results and they are listed here:

American Society for Colposcopy & Cervical Cytology.

Patient info can be found at:

FamilyDoctor.org

And a simple algorithm can also be found here:

Click.

Let me know if you find any more good ones.
